Overview of this product
These tebachi are one of the essential tea utensils for tea ceremonies at that time.
They are used to carry food during tea kaiseki.
Nowadays they are used to carry Japanese sweets, but in the past the host of a tea ceremony would serve grilled fish to two or three guests,
pulling out a bamboo leaf and placing two or three bite-sized pieces of grilled fish on it.

This is one of very few surviving tebachi from the Momoyama period.
There are very few surviving Momoyama tebachi.

Historical background: Momoyama period.

Maker: There is a kamajirushi mark on the back.
The individual cannot be identified.
Only a limited number of people made tea utensils, and they were made by sophisticated potters.

Design
Among the various types of tebatchi, this is a relatively orthodox shape.
When viewed from the front, six vivid scarlet colors appear, demonstrating the design of potters with a high level of aesthetic sense at the time.
In order to capture this appearance, the piece was fired with small kiln tools placed on it. By placing the kiln tools on the piece, this appearance is created. However, in an era without electricity or thermometers, this was done solely by the potter’s senses, so it did not necessarily result in the appearance of the scarlet color.

Uses
One of the tools used in tea ceremonies. Mainly used to carry a bite of food.
Chakaiseki was the high-class cuisine served at tea ceremonies at that time.

Modern uses
Such old tools are still used in tea ceremonies at the Urasenke and Omotesenke schools today.
Ko-Bizen is still used in modern tea ceremonies, and is used for admiration.
